Our Mission:
The Barnes Sons Lime Kiln seeks to engage visitors in the Lime production and Mining operations that constituted a way of life in Western Massachusetts in the late Eighteenth and early Twentieth Century. In close proximity to the Appalachian National Scenic Trail, this site is maintained and preserved in conjunction with the National Parks Service and the Appalachian Trail Conservancy to prevent, as much as possible, the further weathering and destruction of the remaining structures.
The information and visuals presented here seek to elaborate on operational practices, important players, and the connection of this particular site (and its history) to the surrounding community of Sheffield, MA. In protecting the sites beautiful brick structures, we aid in maintaining park lands and preserving the story of the former prominent mining and industrial operations of the County that once made the towns of the Berkshires boom.
